The Consultation is the foundation stone of General Practice. GP Registrars regularly learn from examining their own consultation and video recording has is an effective way of doing this.
External review of videos is part of Summative Assessment, the “end-point” of Registrar training, and is an obligatory section of the examination for MRCGP.
Learning from Consultation Analysis may continue throughout one’s professional career and confidential external review by a peer with experience in Video Consultation Analysis is a recognised outcome from Appraisal. It provides a method for Reflective learning and shows a high level of learning awareness by helping to reveal aspect of our behaviour that might be improved, but which without external review we maybe unaware.
Video analysis by a member of the GP Education Team is available.
How to prepare:
Feedback will be presented as a written critique based on established methods of providing feedback and referenced to established models of what represents quality in the consultation, for example the RCGP Fellowship by Assessment criteria.
For example, page 5 of the Workbook available at http://www.rcgp.org.uk/exams/examination_home/examination_information/vide o_workbook.aspx
This feedback becomes of greater developmental value if you consider your own reflections on the reviewers comments. Both the Review and your Reflections can be submitted as evidence for Appraisal purposes of “Maintaining Good Medical Practice”
